Area children win big at golf tournament

No one won a car for a hole-in-one at the Family Trust Charity Golf Tournament, but children in York County got a prize anyway. More than $30,000 in proceeds will be given to the Children’s Attention Home, the Palmetto School at the Children’s Attention Home and the Boys & Girls Clubs of York County.

“We’re here for a greater purpose,” said Lee Gardner, president and CEO. “Every dollar raised here goes to the organizations.”

Over 30 teams played in the tournament Tuesday at the Tega Cay Golf Center. The tournament was supported by 12 major sponsors, five table sponsors 46 hole sponsors, and over 65 donated raffle items.

“It’s an honor to be associated with Family Trust,” said Rebecca Melton, executive director at the Children’s Attention Home. “It’s like having the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.”

Tournament proceeds will help the home, which serves abused, neglected and abandoned children, provide food and shelter, social services and counseling. “People think the kids come during the day and go somewhere at night,” said Rebecca, adding they served 150 children last year. “They can’t go home.”

Many of the children attend the Palmetto School, which will use the proceeds to hire a part-time science teacher for the middle school. “We couldn’t do it without you,” said Dr. Hugh Wilson, principal. “This is a big piece of our budget.”

Like the Palmetto School, the Boys & Girls Clubs provide individual instruction at their after-school and summer camp programs in Rock Hill and Fort Mill. They’ll use the proceeds to do provide scholarships for their summer camp, said David Carriker, executive director.

“We’re excited for the clubs and for our kids,” he said. “Folks like Family Trust make this a great community to live in.”

Platinum sponsors for the tournament were Williams & Fudge and J.M. Cope Construction; gold sponsors were Burns-Fazzi, Brock, Cintas Document Management, and STR Mechanical Inc.; silver sponsors were CUNA Mutual, Comporium Communications, E.W. Process, STV Inc., and Travelers Insurance Agency; bronze sponsors were The Climer Group-Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Table sponsors were Celanese Chiropractic Health and Performance, Innova Plan Strategies, Environmental Holdings Group, Merle Norman Cosmetics-Rock Hill, and Warren Norman Co. In-kind sponsors were Fort Mill Ford, WRHI, CN2, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Rock Hill Coca-Cola, and Penn Station.

“We are so grateful,” said Rebecca of the Attention Home. “We appreciate being a part of today.”
